What is Japanese New Year’s Special Sweet Soup “Oshiruko (おしるこ)”?

What is “Oshiruko(おしるこ)” ?

Good evening! 

I’m introducing “Oshiruko (おしるこ)” !

Do you know “Oshiruko”?

Oshiruko is sweet red bean and Mochi soup.

It is one of the New Year’s dishes.

But it isn’t eat in 1th Jan.

When do we eat?

Answer is 11th Jan in my area. (But it is diffrent each area)

Kagamibiraki(鏡開き) culture is involved.

What is Kagamibiraki?

In Japan, Kagamimochi (mirror-shaped rice cake) is offered to the gods at New Year's to wish for good luck in the New Year.
The Kagamimochi is offered to the gods,After that  eaten on January 11.

Note that it should not be cut with a knife.

Because Kagamimochi contain the spirit of the gods. For this reason, it is considered bad luck to use a knife. 

That is why the mochi does not have a beautiful shape.

It is then enjoyed as oshiruko, a sweet soup with azuki beans, sugar, and kagamimochi.

In fact, oshiruko can be eaten outside of the New Year as well.

If you come to Japan during the winter season, please check the vending machines.

In fact,vending machines sell oshiruko (sweet red-bean soup)  only in winter.
*They might also be selling corn potage!

In addition, restaurants that offer Japanese sweets may have oshiruko in their lineup.
